April 2012 Newsletter

Hello and Welcome to our April 2012 newsletter.

Our aim is to be able to update you on anything you have missed over the last month or so, especially if you missed a meeting.

April Meeting

8 members attended and we had 1 new member.

Eater Egg Hunt

We had several apologies this month; understandable as several people were away for the Easter break. However those who attended were sent out into the elements to scour the streets of Pontypridd chasing clues which Emma had prepared. Each team of two was timed leaving the hall, and given 1 hour to solve all the clues and discover the ultimate meeting place. Shelly and Ellis romped home in first place, but everyone was rewarded with a little something from Emma’s back of goodies.

Glamorgan Show There is still time to think about the Glamorgan Show, which is on 28th July 2012 at North Cornelly Community Centre from 10am to 5pm. All entry forms should be submitted as soon as possible, but no later than 29th June, so still several weeks to get things in order. A few schedules, including details of requirements for exhibits, will be on the information table at each meeting, together with a copy of “On with the Show”, the NFWI Handbook for Exhibitors, Judges and Show Committees.

Supper Club Six of us met at La Trattoria in High Street this month and had a very pleasant evening. Ladies, if you haven’t managed to join us for our regular supper club, please think about it. The food is very good and at £9 (approx) for two courses on their special early evening menu it really is very good value. The staff are pleasant and we have never been rushed – and so far we haven’t been thrown out for the noise (just enthusiastic laughter) we make either.

Book Club Anne Evans, one of our newer members, will be hosting the first meeting of our Book Club at her home this month. There was positive response to this idea, and although we have had apologies this month because of various commitments, we hope this will be the start of a successful venture. At the moment the plan is to meet every six weeks but we will let you have more details as things develop – so watch this space.

May Meeting As we explained in last month’s newsletter there has been a change to the programme for May. We will now have a presentation from the Safe Foundation which is a UK Charity, founded in 2007 to support small communities all over the world to develop their own projects to overcome hardship and improve their quality of life

Food Bank Please don’t forget our own charity for the year, the local Food Bank. Any donations of non-perishable food (e.g. canned fruit and veg, UHT milk, Packet soups etc) are acceptable; doesn’t need to be anything expensive, but will be of great value to a local family in financial difficulty – on the increase now in the current financial climate.

WI Banner You may remember that Janet Jones, our advisor (and one of our members) mentioned at our AGM in January that the WI will be celebrating the centenary in 2013. It is planned there will be a banner parade; this is something that will have to be clarified because our details are a bit vague at the moment. But we don’t have a banner. Designing and producing one is something we hope can be a joint project for any members interested. The logo we use at the moment (the bandstand in the park) although appropriate for “Ynysangharad” is too intricate for a banner. We need something simpler and something we can adopt as our own. How about a competition for designing our own logo?

Recipe for the Month

This is from a book borrowed from a friend for something completely different, but this might be a refreshing change if you are entertaining friends at a summer BBQ (Weather lousy – yes, but let’s try some positive thinking) or cheering them up with a retro party. Please bear in mind this is a book that she had when first married and would be in the days of crimplene flairs and Peace and Love, but the recipes are just as good as ever.

Sparkling Peach Cup (20 glasses)

1 bottle rose wine
1 bottle white wine
1 miniature bottle peach brandy
2 tablespoons medium sweet sherry
1 level tablespoon castor sugar
1 large can peach slices
½ pint pure apple juice
½ pint lemonade
Slices of orange, lemon and cucumber
Ice cubes
Chill wine, place peach brandy, sherry and sugar in a large punch bowl and stir until sugar has dissolved. Add contents of can of peaches, rose wine, white wine and apple juice; leave in a cool place for about an hour. Just before serving add lemonade. Float orange lemon and cucumber slices and ice cubes on top.

Thought for the Month

Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavouring, and washing up liquid made with real lemons?
