April 2013 Newsletter

Welcome to our April 2013 newsletter.

Our aim is to be able to update you on anything you may have missed if you didn't attend our April 2013 meeting and also to inform you of any future events.

April meeting
  • A good turnout for this meeting 17 members attended to listen to Colin Gregory and Owen Davies give a talk on the development of the Pontypridd Canal. There were slides shown of where the canal started in Merthyr to where it ended in Cardiff and also of how the development is progressing. For those who were familiar with Pontypridd a long time ago it was a trip down memory lane.

Summer Trip
  • We recently voted on where we would like to go for our Summer Trip this year. It was decided to meet up in St Fagans: National History Museum, this will replace our August monthly meeting at the church hall. Members, friends and family will all be welcome and further details of our get together will be available soon.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 8th May
  • This meeting is our annual AGM so hope you can all attend.

Supper Club
  • Our next 'Supper Club' is on the 20th June 2013 at La Trattoria, Pontypridd. Apologies as there should have been one in April but we inadvertently forgot to take names so it never went ahead.

Banner making evening

  • Thank you to all those who are able to attend the Banner making evening and also a big thank you to Carol and Cheryl who are leading us every step of the way. It was exciting at our last meeting to see it starting to come together. The parade of banners will be at the 90th Anniversary Christmas Festival, St Davids Hall, Cardiff on Monday 2 December 2013. There will also be The Gfwi massed choir with Huw Tregelles Williams and Conductor Alun TregellesWilliams and Guest Artistes ‘ONLY MEN ALOUD’ there and tickets are priced at £22.50. Tickets will be distributed on a first come first served basis so if anyone is interested please see Erica or Pat at the next meeting.

Please don’t forget our chosen charity– the Local Food Bank and bring a non perishable food item if you want to donate. Doesn’t have to be anything expensive – small can of fruit, long life milk, packet soup, etc.

Forthcoming events...further details on these events can be found on the information table in the church hall.

  • August’s walk towards the 90 mile walk challenge will be around Pontypridd, on Tuesday 20 August. This varied walk is approximately 5 miles in length and takes in countryside, roads around Pontypridd and a visit to its famous park. There is one steep clime over a distance of 1 mile.

  • Glamorgan WI Show 27 July 2013. Advance tickets are now available for the Show. These will give entry at £2 instead of £2.50 at the door on the day.

Welcome to our January 2013 newsletter.

Our aim is to be able to update you on anything you may have missed if you didn't attend our January 2013 meeting and also to inform you of any future events.

January meeting

  • A good turnout for this meeting 14 members plus 3 guests attended and there were 3 apologies.
  • Our guest for our January meeting was Carol Davies who gave us a talk on patchwork and how we could incorporate it into the making of our banner. Those who attended would probably agree Carol's work was quite impressive. Carol has kindly offered her services in helping us make a banner and we will be cutting and sewing to our hearts content on the 4th Wednesday of every month, between 7pm and 9pm in the hall where we hold our monthly meeting. The first meet will be on Wednesday 27th February.
  • We asked members who attended the meeting to vote on 2 resolutions put forward by the NFWI. The resolutions put forward are as follows:

A) Decline of our High Streets
B) Suicide in young people.

The one that had the most votes (although there was only 1 vote difference) was
B) Suicide in young people.

  • WI membership fees are due in January and the cost of membership for 2013 is £33.00 per annum. If you were unable to attend the January meeting you are more than welcome to pay at the February meeting.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 13th February and there has been a change to the attached programme. Our guest for the evening is now a Lady who is the Communities First Area Co-ordinator for the Glyncoch area? Full details not available at this time.

Supper Club.... Our next 'Supper Club' is on the 21st February 2013 at La Trattoria, Pontypridd, if you wish to attend names will be taken at the next meeting.

November/December 2012 Newsletter

Welcome to our November/December 2012 newsletter.

Apologies for the lateness of this newsletter, Christmas has been on my mind for the last couple of months and everything else went by the board. When I did get around to writing the newsletter for some reason I didn't save it correctly and I lost all the work. Anyway, the aim of the newsletter is to be able to update you on anything you may have missed if you didn't attend our November and December meetings and also to inform you of any future events.

                                    ******************************************

November meeting

  • 11 members plus 2 guests attended our November meeting and there were 3 apologies.

  • Our guest for our November 14th meeting was Jeanette Blackmore a representative from the Body Shop. It was an opportunity to promote our branch by bringing a friend or relative. We raised over £50.00 for our group whilst having a really enjoyable evening. We had an opportunity to test many of the Body Shop products and sort out some Christmas presents.

  • We asked members to design a logo to put on our stationery and banner. Votes were made by all attendees and I am pleased to announce that Cheryl John was the winner. Cheryl created a wonderful gate design which Erica is in the process of editing to enable it to be used as our logo.

                                        *********************************************

December meeting/Annual Christmas Dinner

  • Thank you to all who attended our Christmas meal at La Trattoria on the 12th December and for making it such an enjoyable evening. There were 13 members at the Dinner and as usual the meal was wonderful and excellent value for money. Thanks to Erica and Ellis for organizing the Christmas meal.

                                       ********************************************

January 9th 2013 is our first meeting of the New Year. We have guests Carol Davies and Jacqui Pugh who will talk to us about patchwork and give us some ideas on how to start our banner which needs to be completed by November 2013. Hope to see you there.

  • Just a reminder that WI membership fees are due in January. The cost of membership for 2013 is £33.00 per annum.
  • At our January meeting we have been asked to vote on which resolutions we want to go to the vote at the 2013 NFWI AGM which is being held in Cardiff this year. The two resolutions short listed are:
a) Decline of our high streets and town centres
b) Resolving to keep young people suicide-safe online

Further details on these resolutions can be found on the NFWI website or in the November/December edition of the WI Life Magazine.

Please don’t forget our chosen charity – the Local Food Bank and bring a non perishable food item if you want to donate. Doesn’t have to be anything expensive – small can of fruit, long life milk, packet soup, etc.
